They departed Nickerie at about 17:00 hours for Guyana.She related that the journey should have lasted about 25 minutes. When she did not see him within that time frame, she became concerned, but never expected the news that followed.Another boat passed them on the way, and when that group arrived she enquired of her husband’s whereabouts. “He seh they pass them on the river” and that they were coming behind.“We look, we wait a good time, we ain’t see nothing. We send a boat to search fuh them after the boy say that seine deh across the river and that he ain’t know if they gwine see it.”Mrs. Ramdass indicated that the Corentyne River was familiar to her husband, since he had been plying his trade on the very river since 2003. According to her, safety measures were in place on the boat. “When they find the bodies, all of them had on life jacket.”This, however, differed from reports provided by some of the public service persons conducting the search for the bodies.Ms. Sevi 2 was found overturned and drifting on Saturday with the seine attached to the propeller.According to the survivor, the Ms Sevi 2, while crossing, was caught up by a “Dutch boat” that brought two other passengers and placed them in the Ms Sevi 2. The two did not have life vests, the survivor said.He said that while crossing, their boat became entangled with a seine in the river, and before long started to sink because the people aboard could not free the vessel. When the boat capsized people held on for dear life. It was at this point that someone asked Leslie Austin to swim for help—He ended up at about the Number 71 Village foreshore some three hours later and raised an alarm, but by then people had begun to fear the worse.Mrs Ramdass was in a pensive mood late yesterday afternoon. She was very hopeful that her husband would turn up alive.“Me know he still alive and deh somewhere out deh, because he got a life jacket on. Is the first time something like that happen to he. We call the police in Suriname and ask them to come out with we and help, but them nah come.”With a weak voice, she mumbled as she swung in a hammock under a shed by the sea shore. “When he nah working he does deh rocking in this same hammock.”The couple had been married for 25 years and the union produced four children.Ena Hope’s relatives declined to comment, saying they were too traumatised.The police in Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force were saying nothing.Just hours after the tragedy, other boat loads of back trackers were seen departing the Roy Ramdass landing on their way to Suriname.Meanwhile unconfirmed reports indicate that two reporters from neighbouring Suriname were detained at the Springlands Police Station after they attempted to photograph the bodies of two of the victims at the Skeldon Hospital morgue. They were subsequently released.This is just one of the serious river mishaps to occur on the Corentyne. On February 2nd, 2007, two women — Hansranie and Cheryl Peters, 35, of Lot 335 Mocha Arcadia, East Bank Demerara — suffered a similar fate after the boat they were travelling in sank in the Corentyne River.The two, along with eight others, had allegedly departed Guyana illegally at a landing at Number 78 Village, Corentyne. They were heading to Clara Polder in Nickerie, Suriname.Back then the survivors had reportedly told police that the propeller became entangled with a seine, tossing the occupants overboard.
